Machine Assist Felling Skills Standards Development Project

There's still time to have your say on draft skill standards for Machine Assist Felling (MAF) and tree-felling. Please review the consultation information below, then complete the survey with your feedback. Please provide your feedback by Tuesday 25 February.

Project focus

We have been working with representatives from the industry and vocational education sector on the review and development of the skill standards since November 2024.

The MAF project is focused on reviewing Level 4 standards and exploring the potential for micro-credentials. By working with industry experts, we will develop education products to equip Tree Fellers and Machine Operators with the necessary skills to safely engage in Machine Assist Felling,

We have also conducted a comprehensive review of current industry training, assessment, and guidance materials to address critical gaps in the sector. Issues identified that were missing or not adequate were level 4 non-production tree felling and non-pine tree felling.

Our collaboration and engagement with industry

Our Technical Advisory Group meets regularly. They bring valuable subject matter expertise to refine the required skills for safe MAF operators in the new skill standards.

Additionally, we work with other key industry partners, as well as Māori businesses, trades academies, and employers, to ensure career pathways are visible, and improve access to training and employment opportunities in the people, food, and fibre sector.

Have your say

We are now seeking feedback on draft skill standards for Machine Assist Felling (MAF) and tree-felling:

  • three standards about MAF, and

  • two standards covering Level 4 non-production tree felling and felling of minor (non-pine) species.

The draft skill standards are open for industry feedback. View the draft standards here: New standards for Machine Assist Felling.

We encourage you to review them and provide your insights via the link: Have your say.

Our TAG will review your feedback. Please make sure your feedback includes your suggested changes and the reasons for the changes. If we understand the ‘why’ of your feedback we can refine the skill standards so that they meet the needs of the industry.

Please provide your feedback by Tuesday 25 February 2025.
